"Living with IBS is a challenge at the best of times. During a stress-related flare up, my IBS became increasingly difficult to manage, even with medication, and my GP suggested I try the low FODMAP diet. I was pretty desperate to find something to improve my symptoms. However, a thorough Internet search revealed a plethora of confusing, and sometimes conflicting, information about the diet. To add some complexity to my circumstances, I have also followed a vegan diet for the last 18 years. That’s when I realised that I needed specialist advice.

My next online search led me quickly to the website of Greystones Dietetics and I noted that Hannah specialised in IBS and the low FODMAP diet and that she also advised people on vegan diets. Brilliant! I made an appointment.

At the first consultation I felt that Hannah not only understood my situation, but that she was positively affirming of my plant-based diet. I received the necessary information to get started on the low FODMAP diet in a way that was congruent with veganism. She directed me to helpful resources and gave me a leaflet summarising the diet.


During phase one of the diet I saw an immediate improvement! However, during phase two, where potential trigger foods are introduced, my progress was a little more turbulent. There were points where I could have abandoned the diet in despair. This was another stage where Hannah’s advice and support were essential in raising my spirits and encouraging me to persevere. She pointed out the gains I had achieved and the useful information I was getting about which foods I could tolerate, which I could eat in moderation and which might be best avoided.

I am nearly at the end of this process now and feel much more confident and in control of my diet and symptoms. IBS is not a subject you want to discuss with just anyone. It’s potentially embarrassing and can leave you feeling down. Additionally, there are such a variety of potential symptoms that generic advice is not helpful to everyone. With Hannah, I felt I could speak openly to someone who understood and had the time to address my particular concerns. I received personalised advice both during face-to-face meetings and in email communications. This was invaluable and was key in enabling me to keep going through to the final stage of the process. I now feel more able to make food choices which are beneficial to my health and which minimise the chances of unwanted symptoms.
